Named for the town it's situated in, from the Gaelic 'Bogh Mòr', which roughly translates to 'The Big Bend / Reef'. The town is the administrative capital of Islay. Bowmore is Islay's oldest distillery, with the first recorded mention of the distillery going back to 1779, having been founded by David Simpson. The distillery was bought by twins William and James Mutter in 1837, who built the lade from the River Laggan to the distillery, which they still use today. The distillery changed hands many times between 1887 and 1963, when it was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison for £117,000. He sold 35% to Japanese distillers Suntory in 1989, before a full sale of Morrison Bowmore brands in 1994. In 1991, Bowmore donated one of its warehouses to the local community, who turned it into The MacTaggart Leisure Centre, a swimming pool. The pool is heated by recycled energy from the distillery's still house. Bowmore's legendary No. 1 Vaults, which is their old stone maturation warehouse that sits on the edge of Loch Indaal, is in fact the oldest whisky maturation warehouse in the world. The sea wall side sits below sea level, creating a cold and damp environment, influenced by sea air that is vital in determining that distinctive final character of their whisky. The Bowmore Vault Edition Atlantic Sea Salt is the first bottled release in a four-part limited edition series launched to showcase the unique characteristics of their distillery. Created using hand selected ex-bourbon casks, this whisky reflects the distinctive microclimate found in the depths of the No.1 Vaults, where it is aged. Their current Master Blender is Ron Welsh, appointed in 2017 he notably created Laphroaig Quarter Cask.
